Canada's Badlands

Drumheller isn’t officially designated as a dark sky preserve, yet the Badlands have a remarkable ability to dim the world around you and let the night sky take centre stage. After sunset, the hoodoos fade into shadow, the coulees go quiet, and the valley settles into a kind of stillness that feels intentional. With the lights out and the horizons wide open, the sky takes over, and suddenly you are standing in one of Alberta’s most unexpected and rewarding places to watch the night unfold.

Badlands After Dark

Let’s be real, Drumheller is outrageously photogenic. This valley is the heart of Canada’s Badlands, and somehow every turn in the road delivers another “wait, stop, I need a picture” moment. Whether you’re chasing sunsets, dramatic landscapes, or that perfect shot for your grid, this place shows up every single time.

The Drumheller Valley does not just look ancient, it is ancient. Wind, water, and time have been shaping these canyons, hoodoos, and riverbanks for millions of years. Beneath your boots are layers of history, rare plants, fragile soils, and fossils that hold secrets older than humans themselves. When you visit, you become part of that story, and how you travel here matters.

Because the best adventures include muddy paws and a co-pilot with a tail. If you are the kind of person who will not book a trip unless your dog can come too, welcome. You are among friends here. Drumheller is one of those rare places that actually works for people travelling with pets: wide open spaces, river walks, dog-friendly patios, quiet trails, and a whole town that does not blink when a pup wanders by with their human in tow. Whether you have a senior floof, a high-energy explorer, or a tiny diva who only walks when the vibes are right, this valley makes it easy to bring them along.

It is late September, blue skies, mild temperatures, and perfect riding weather. Depending on the season, the colours change, but as far as the eye can see, the low autumn sun turns freshly cut wheat into glowing golden fields. The road drops unexpectedly into Drumheller, and suddenly you are surrounded by layers of canyon. It feels like travelling back in time.

Whether it is inflation, shrinkflation, or the ever-increasing cost of living, it seems like everything continues to get more and more expensive. The good news is there is plenty to experience in the Drumheller area on a limited budget. You do not have to break the bank to enjoy the beauty of the Badlands.

Smart Travel

Drumheller is the latter. Think of the Badlands as a wild, cinematic landscape where every direction leads to a different story: ghost towns, canyon lookouts, prairie gardens, live music in grain towns, alpaca farms, wine tastings in orchards, dinosaur bones in the dirt, and long tables under prairie skies.

One of the best things about the Drumheller Valley is that it never truly has an off-season. It just changes outfits. Sometimes it is snow-dusted hoodoos, cozy theatres, and warm cafés. Sometimes it is blooming cactuses, canyon hikes, and long river walks. Sometimes it is festival lights, live music, roaring engines, or long summer nights downtown. No matter when you show up, something is happening, and chances are, it is something you did not even know you were looking for.

In 1911, the Newcastle Mine hauled its first load of coal by wheelbarrow, sparking the Drumheller Valley’s Great Coal Rush. By 1926, more than a dozen mines ran at full capacity, and twelve thousand migrants lived in hastily built camps along the Red Deer River Valley, including Newcastle, Midland, Rosedale, Rosedeer, Excelsior, and Arcadia.
